POLICE are reappraising their riot control techniques after a group of North Coast women successfully calmed a gang of violent youths last weekend by walking towards them chanting peace slogans.
As well as being drilled in Bob Dylan and Joan Baez lyrics, NSW police may be issued with plastic flowers to stick in the end of their pistols and giant joss sticks instead of truncheons.
An officer who asked, "Will we still be able to bash people over the head with them?" has been offered counseling.
Filmmakers planning to turn the Repentance Creek showdown into a movie are said to be interested in paying homage to the Mahatma by having the North Coast women - played by Cate Blanchett, Nicole Kidman and Meryl Streep (in a non-speaking role) - approach the violent hordes wearing only skimpy homespun cotton dhotis.
However, as this might fall foul of Australia's tough new internet censorship laws, producers were expected to wimp out and opt for more violence instead.
