BOB BAIN ON-LINE ( 20 years 1988-2008 )

from the Prophet BBS run by Larry Lewis (listed in this article on Bulletin Boards March 1985) to Paragon BBS run by Jennifer Allen (closed 1996) to today's big and glitzy Internet via a few byways along the way.

"Unfortunately bulletin boards are in danger of becoming a self-limiting phenomenon, the victim of frivolous usage. There are users who, with a mood of selfishness, toying, even abuse, literally "break" bulletin boards. They crack special codes, damage the computer and wipe out disks. There are others who write irate and obscene messages."

Uh huh !

from the article linked to above

Larry Lewis closed Prophet BBS a few months after I signed up (mostly due to those who write irate and obscene message I seem to recall).

Jenny kept Paragon BBS running until 1996. I last saw Jenny in 2004 while working ( temporarily ) for Rockdale City Council. I thought it would be listed in the archives (January 2004 Live Journal archives) but I can't find it. I guess this is one reason to keep this "blog" alive. It is a diary of past - and sometimes tumultuous - events.

I noticed that your BBS wasn't listed so I assumed you weren't on-line in 1985. I'm not sure if Jenny Allen's was on-line in 1985. I believe Jenny and Michael set it up in 1987 but I'm only guessing. They didn't close it down but passed it over to another mob who (while given the TBBS software for free - or very cheaply ) couldn't make it work despite having two users (Theo [Bee] and me]). Eventually Theo and I moved on and the BBS shut up shop for good. I think Jenny became afraid of "the thing that had to be closed down" due to pressure by Telstra and being scared of possible legal issues.
