X-rated pornographic movies and drugs seized in sex shop raid – Darlinghurst

Thursday, 26 Jun 2008 09:06am

*** MEDIA TO NOTE: Footage of yesterday’s raid will be available through Channel 10 after 11am today while still images will be available through the Police Media Unit. ***

Police have seized thousands of pornographic movies and more than three litres of a substance believed to be amyl nitrate during a raid on an inner Sydney adult book shop.

Just after 10am yesterday officers from the Central Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad executed a search warrant upon the store on Oxford Street, Darlinghurst.

It followed information received by police about the alleged supply of unclassified pornographic material and illicit drugs from the premises.

Officers spent much of the day cataloguing and seizing items from the store, including 165 vials of what is believed to be amyl nitrate, a prescribed restricted substance under the Poisons Act.

There were 4903 DVDs and 68 videos seized which were X-rated or unclassified.

The vials seized will undergo drug analysis while the movie items will be classified.

Police believe charges are likely to be laid in the future.

Inquiries are continuing and anyone who suspects the supply of drugs or illegal movies should phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Excuse me unclassified and illegal movies are available almost anywhere in New South Wales. They are illegal to sell under statute law. If the law were changed they would not be illegal to sell and there would be less crime. It was my belief that I had already explained this to the Crime Stopper people.

Nothing at all about this on the 5 pm news bulletin (Channel 10) but there is a evening news bulletin. It was a legally interesting news bulletin however.

As I understand it it's a defence to state you are the father of three children in which case your name isn't mentioned in the newspapers.

Such a silly, silly law. NSW residents can buy X-Rated from the ACT, but not NSW. When outsiders of this country look at that law they must really scratch their heads.

How about we allow the sale of X-Rated in NSW, QLD etc and to keep the State Governments happy we put a $2 'filthy porno tax' on each one sold. I know QLD could use the extra cash and considering we've been labeled as one of the highest interstate purchasers of X18, we'd be rolling in the green.
