In my LiveJournal on the 4th. May I wrote:-
Earlier today I wrote "The Internet dropped out at 9 am yesterday and didn't reappear until 3 am this morning. TPG explained that it was a "third party" problem at St. Mary's exchange."
The Sydney Morning Herald reports
Failed fraud attempt blocks out suburbs..
May 7, 2008
THEY arrived in safety vests to look like maintenance staff, and set about cutting cables.
The EFTPOS machines at Westpoint shopping centre in Blacktown were to go down, it seems, and the shops would resort to manual transactions. And stores would be open to a spate of fraudulent purchases.
But instead of the EFTPOS cables they cut communications cables. Instead of a crime spree they stripped phone and internet access from much of western Sydney for the weekend.
A shopping centre spokeswoman last night confirmed an attempt to cut the EFTPOS cable had failed on Saturday morning, although shop owners were warned not to use manual transaction for the day.
About the same time, police responded to reports men in safety vests had been seen cutting telecommunications cables, which stripped phone and internet access from 10,000 homes in Blacktown and surrounding suburbs
Inside Retailing adds..
Seven News reported that the men were believed to be members of a gang who were possibly linked to five eftpos cable cuts in the past six weeks.
I don't think this has anything to do with police raids on pornography outlets in Blacktown and St. Marys although I guess both fall under the jurisdiction of the Blacktown local area commander. While St. Marys is part of the Federal Electorate of Lindsay (where I live) St. Marys is part of the New South Wales Londonderry electorate which includes Werrington, St. Marys and Mt. Druitt and Mt. Druitt is officially part of Blacktown.
"In the south, the seat includes Cambridge Park, Werrington and St Marys north of the railway line, as well as Mount Druitt, Blackett and parts of Cranebrook."
Allan Shearan's electoral office is almost next door (in Werrington).
So what do we have..... 50 police busy raiding porn shops in respect of unclassified videos and sifting through the titles while men with bolt cutters attempt to defraud an entire shopping centre and then they ban schoolchildren from entering the shopping centre dressed in uniform.
I think I understand now.
