|Melbourne Cup Day
||[Nov. 6th, 2007|07:00 am]
They are running the Melbourne Cup this arvo. This is a national institution and at around 3 pm the nation comes to a standstill as almost everyone in a place of employment watches the telly. Even parliament (currently disbanded due to the election on November 24th) comes to a standstill. I believe it's a public holiday in Melbourne.
They ran a computer simulation on the TV last night which demonstrated that the infamous horse Phar Lap (drugged and killed in the United States) would probably have come last in a field of modern genetically bred horses.
However, in 2006 Australian Synchrotron Research scientists said it was almost certain Phar Lap was poisoned with a large dose of arsenic, supporting the theory that Phar Lap was killed on the orders of US gangsters, who feared the Melbourne-Cup-winning champion would inflict big losses on their illegal bookmakers.
I've had a haircut. I'm off to DEN this morning.
