Crackdown on "sorcery" in Russia [Aug. 21st, 2005|01:05 pm]

From "The World" "org"....

"Sorcerers and wizards in Russia beware! A Moscow politician has conjured up a bill to crack down on the practice of using magic to sooth troubled souls. The BBC's Steve Rosenberg reports."

This seemingly affects witches as well. In future I understand those indulging in "sorcery" will be required to be licensed and to have medical training. The use of religious symbolism is to be (may be) outlawed.

i had a great deal of trouble hearing the audio - it didn't work at all in Netscape or Firefox, and, although i got it to play in IE, the browser froze up when the sound clip ended. but here's the text version.

it seems to me that the "wizards" are basically practicing a form of shamanism - the very word "shaman" is Siberian in origin. there may very well be some of them who are either doing actual harm to their clients, or dishonestly separating them from their money, but it seems to me that passing laws against it is an over-reaction.

i've sent the article to The Witches' Voice, which is the oldest and most comprehensive site for all things relating to Wicca, paganism, magick, and related subjects. among other things, they keep a large database of news.
