Saturday evening.. [May. 24th, 2008|09:47 pm]

[Current Mood |sleepysleepy]

I have installed a new modem/router. It's a LinkSys Wireless modem router and immediately I unplugged the old one and booted up with the new one things improved dramatically.

1). The errors I received on boot up complaining about the hard disk being faulty and unable to be repaired disappeared. I was then (at last) able to defragment the C: drive which I haven't been able to do before.

2). The device is easier to configure. All the problems I experienced attempting to set port forwarding so that I could use an FTP server accessible from the outside world disappeared. Port forwarding can be a problem with BitTorrent downloads as well. The issue with an FTP server is that it enables me to receive and send files to and from potential clients to work on at home providing my company gets that far. This means setting up passwords and access rights but that isn't hard with this particular device. I can connect to the FTP server from home but it remains to be seen if I can do so from outside the cloisters of this townhouse. I have established a free domain name for this purpose (based in the Cocos Islands which are Australian Territory and administered by the Attorney General's Department)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cocos_(Keeling)_Islands (ok so it's a long way from Werrington BUT this is a GLOBAL Internet) :-)

I am also expecting a LinkSys VOIP device on Monday for use with Internet Telephony. It was a CeBit $1 if you purchase now special. It enables me to plug a POTS phone into one socket and another socket is connected to a switch on the network. It enables cheap overseas calls via a "normal" telephone. It also does fax. I am contemplating that TPG will eventually move to naked DSL which consists of unplugging certain aspects of their DSLAM device at the telephone exchange. This means there is no "normal" telephone - just VOIP.

I have also taken up an offer with BT and WestPac to transfer my assortment of superannuation funds into their on-line Super account which links to WestPac on-line banking. It even prints the government forms necessary to make the transfers. I have spent hours attempting to gather the information, print it out and send if off to the four funds. The new fund has a number of benefits which I won't list here.

Tomorrow is Sunday. A man from Jehovah's Witnesses turned up at my door again this morning and offered to arrange for someone to pick me up at some undetermined time to attend one of their church gatherings. Perhaps they are in the market for accounting and ancillary services :-)
