Ultrasound [Apr. 18th, 2007|08:29 pm]

[Current Mood |pensivepensive]

There has been an increase in the size of the aorta from 4.8... (something) cm to 4.8....(something) cm bringing it close to (or at) 4.9 cm.  This is something to be concerned about.  The cardiologist appeared somewhat ambiguous describing the increase in one sentence as "insignificant" and then showing me another view from another direction showing a size of 5.03 cm to which he remarked "If it gets any larger than this we'll need to book an appointment with a surgeon" while noting that at present this isn't considered necessary.

The next appointment is in six months time which is where my current budget ends.  ("Budget" - not "money".)

He has a (new) monitor on his desk where he can display ultrasound views of the heart and it's associated organs.  Previously he had to view the results in the room where the ultrasound equipment is located.

I shifted the Penrith council "pick up" stuff to the kerbside this evening.  I have decided to keep the Beta format video recorder as there is also a remote control and about 20 tapes.  I have no idea whether the unit works or what the tapes contain.   They must be ancient.  If they are TV broadcasts it's often interesting watching news and current affairs from previous years.  Before I even think about viewing those I would like to transfer the assorted video of mum and dad (and Ken and family) and indeed Paragon Bulletin Board operator Jenny and dad to DVD.  (Jenny visited England in 1994 and wished to see how the "locals" actually live") :-)

(I last spoke with Jenny back in 2004 when I had a brief contract with Rockdale City Council)

I note Trevor is sending a package of assorted stuff ex late bro' Alan.

This has been a stressful day.  I think it's "a day of rest" tomorrow.  I think "taking it easy" might be good for my overall health.

i'm faintly alarmed to hear that your aorta has enlarged slightly, although the fact that it was only a few tenths of a millimeter leads me to hope that it's functionally meaningless. for what it's worth, i believe that the usual surgical treatment is now a minimally invasive procedure in which they slip a bit of Dacron tubing into the enlarged part to reinforce it, doing so via a small incision in an artery in the thigh (guided by x-rays and/or ultrasound). violent exertion and heavy lifting are contraindicated both before and after surgery. there's also the usual guff about eating a low-cholesterol diet.
